Pipe trades apprenticeship applicants

Free UA apprenticeship math practice

Math comes up in every UA local test announcement we have read, and the arithmetic is usually meant to be done by hand. Locals do not publish their tests, but Steamfitters Local 602 publishes a sample math test, and it mixes plain arithmetic with trade problems: dividing feet and inches, gallons and quarts, BTUs, the 2.31-foot water column, circles and simple formulas. This section practises that mix with original questions — the shared fractions and algebra drill, the pipe-trade problems, and reading a tape to a sixteenth. Some of the fractions and algebra questions offer “No answer” as a fifth option; it is correct when none of the four figures matches.

Check your local's notice. There is no single official UA test. Each local's apprenticeship committee (JATC) chooses its own, and the sections, timing and pass mark vary by local — check your local's notice.

Worked examples

Two more math questions with the answer and explanation. Try each before opening the answer. For a longer set across every section, see our free UA aptitude sample questions.

Question 1. A rectangular tank measures 2 ft × 3 ft × 4 ft inside. One cubic foot holds 7.48 gallons. How many gallons does the tank hold?

  1. 89.76 gal
  2. 179.52 gal
  3. 67.32 gal
  4. 24 gal
Show the answer

B: 179.52 gal. Volume = 2 × 3 × 4 = 24 cubic feet. 24 × 7.48 = 179.52 gallons.

Question 2. Two fittings are 24 inches apart center to center. Each fitting takes up 1 3/8 inches of that distance. How long should the pipe between them be cut?

  1. 21 1/4"
  2. 21 3/8"
  3. 26 3/4"
  4. 22 5/8"
Show the answer

A: 21 1/4". Subtract the allowance at both ends: 1 3/8 + 1 3/8 = 2 3/4 inches. 24 − 2 3/4 = 21 1/4 inches.
